India, 1803. Richard Sharpe's promotion to officer proves to be a dubious honour. The other officers despise him because of his lowly origins. But greatest of all is the hatred of his old nemesis Obadiah Hakeswill. When Sharpe uncovers a betrayal by Hakeswill, he is ambushed and barely survives. Sharpe seeks revenge. But the sleazy Hakeswill has entrenched himself in the Indian mountain fortress of Gawilghur, which is besieged by British troops.
