With the introduction of the Centurion main battle tank in 1945, it became clear that the British wartime armoured transporters, the Scammell Pioneer and the Diamond-T M19, were no longer adequate. From 1951, they were replaced by the Thornycroft FV12000 Antar. It was not until more than thirty years later that the Antar was followed by the Scammel Commander from 1984, which was now also capable of transporting the Challenger 1 main battle tank. The British Army's latest generation of armoured personnel carriers is now the Oshkosh HET Heavy Equipment Transporter, which was delivered to the troops in 2003. This publication takes a detailed look at these three armoured transporters, showing their development, technology and deployment in numerous previously unpublished photos.
