The deadlocked fronts in the First World War accelerated the development of armoured vehicles with internal combustion engines by all warring parties. Because they were more road-bound, wheeled armoured vehicles were assigned other tasks than those with tracked running gear. Walter Spielberger documents the motorisation of the German armed forces up to 1945, describing all the important wheeled vehicle models used by the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht, from Daimler's first road tank car to the dummy tanks of the Weimar Republic and the radio-controlled vehicles of the Second World War.
