The British A30 Challenger tank, an interim solution equipped with the deadly effective 17-pounder anti-tank gun from the Sherman Firefly, provided crucial armor-piercing firepower against the latest German fighting vehicles, including the dreaded Panther tank, in 1944/45. This account sheds new light on these innovative tank designs and their combat in September 1944a critical moment in Operation Market Garden, the Allied attempt to cross the Rhine and end the war by Christmas. In this book, Ivo van der Spoel reconstructs the decisive tank battle outside the Dutch village of Son on September 20, 1944, in which Cromwell and Challenger tanks of the 15th/19th Hussars repelled an attack by Panther tanks of Panzer Brigade 107. In a fierce battle that lasted all day, the British, supported by American paratroopers, destroyed five Panther tanks and repelled one of the most dangerous German attacks on the Market Garden corridor. The text is complemented by rare photographs, color maps, and specially commissioned illustrations showing the two tank types in action.
