There is a legend about the paratroopers who were sent to Algeria. These units, scarred by the defeat at Dien Bien Phu and determined to mobilise all means to avoid another defeat, would have theorised anti-subversive doctrines involving the use of torture before participating in the overthrow of the Fourth Republic and the coup in April 1961.
This schematic representation is far from reflecting the reality of the deployment of all the "paras". It requires a rigorous historical study that adheres closely to the sources and testimonies in order to reflect the history and development of these units, which were only intended for interventions. From the first helicopter missions in the Djebel, carried out under improvisation and time pressure, to the parachute jump over Suez, the battle for Algiers and the chases in the desert to the border battle, Marie-Danielle Demélas shows how these fighters adapted to a new type of conflict. A piece of military history about elite troops involved in a war that shook the French Republic.
