The first Deutsche Bahn rail buses went into service on numerous branch lines during the 1950 summer timetable. They replaced the mostly uneconomical locomotive-hauled trains and thus saved some lines from imminent closure. For decades, the Uerdingen rail bus shaped the face of German rail transport away from the main lines. Generations of schoolchildren and commuters between the Baltic Sea and the Alps were brought safely from one town to another every day by the red railcars of the VT 95/98 series.
On his travels through the German provinces, the well-known railway author Michael Schenk has captured the fascination of the saviour of the branch lines and the beauty of the routes in exquisite colour photographs. More than 200 previously unpublished pictures show the everyday operation of the railbuses between 1950 and the 1990s. In addition to a focus on the seventies and eighties, a chapter with rare atmospheric photos also documents the fifties and sixties. Schenk deliberately avoids comprehensive descriptions of technology and statistics. A must for every railway fan.
