The Semmering Railway, opened in 1854, was a feat of engineering at the time of its construction and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. The builder was the engineer Carl Ritter von Ghega. Work on the electrification of the railway was started after the Second World War and was completed in 1959.
Südbahnmuseum staff member Johann Reisinger has selected over 200 exciting photographs from the holdings of the local history museum in the Mürzzuschlag Winter Sports Museum, the Südbahnmuseum and numerous private collections. The photographs show the impressive railway technology and the elaborate construction work as well as the working and everyday life on the Semmering Railway. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the electrification of the Semmering Railway, this historical coffee-table book was created, which will appeal to all those interested in technology as well as to all friends of Styrian history.
