The battle for the Beta convoy, which is covered in detail in this book, represents the second greatest disaster suffered by the Regia Marina during the Second World War, after the Battle of Cape Matapan on the night of 28 March 1941. It describes how the Italian ships, taken completely by surprise by the enemy attack, failed to respond as they should have done for a number of reprehensible reasons. The defeat was received with great consternation in Italy and Germany and led to protests and discontent on the part of the Royal Italian Navy, which attempted to justify the causes to an incredulous head of government and defence minister, Benito Mussolini.
