Description
Much has been written about the famous German battleship "Bismarck" since her sinking, and the ship herself has always been the focus of attention. But who were the people who lived, worked and fought on her? What moved them? Why did they join the navy in the first place? And where did they come from? The authors have investigated these questions and talked to relatives, survivors and other contemporary witnesses.
The result is a comprehensive work about the true face of a ship, about the most diverse human fates and stories that are all connected to each other through the "Bismarck" and mostly came to a tragic end with her. Volume 1.1 of this five-book complete work deals with the ship's command, i.e. the seafaring personnel of officer and non-commissioned officer rank. Furthermore, the work contains an overview of the history of the "Bismarck", an extensive and detailed introductory text on the crew and their specialist areas of ship artillery, air defence, etc. and crew lists of the individual specialist areas.
It is now over 70 years since the once proud battleship "Bismarck" sank in the waters of the Atlantic and with it a large part of its crew, young men who had mostly served in the Navy for only a short time. A few intense days of action lay behind them. Luck, success and bad luck had accompanied them and led to dramatic turns several times. On 27 May 1941, their short deployment finally came to an end. The "Bismarck", surrounded by enemy ships and herself unable to manoeuvre due to a fatal rudder hit, was sunk. A fate she shared with countless other ships in the Second World War, and yet there is something magical, even fascinating, about her that made her famous.
