Description
The Prussian Navy, the foundation of the later Imperial Navy, was the first "German Navy". Its origins lie in the provision of six million talers by the National Assembly of the Paulskirche in Frankfurt on 14 June 1848. The fact that its history has so far only been dealt with in thematic partial aspects, that it has only been described in a fragmentary and rather one-sided manner, is demonstrated by Henning Krüger's "Political History of the Prussian Navy" as a desideratum of historical research.
Embedded in the general historical context, based on the almost completely preserved files of the Naval Archives, on holdings of the Prussian Ministry of State, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Finance, as well as on the estates of the most important contemporary witnesses, Henning Krüger elaborates the significance of this navy for Prussian foreign policy in the middle of the century. Its reorientation aimed at the unity of Germany through political, economic and military integration. Within this framework, the establishment of a navy was also an offer to other German states to defend their coasts and protect their merchant ships and their interests overseas. This was aimed in particular at the northern German states, which were to be bound to Prussia militarily and thus politically. By filling this gap in historical research, Henning Krüger completes our picture of Prussian history as the engine of German unity. Volume 15 of the series "Kleine Schriftenreihe zur Militär- und Marinegeschichte".
