Description
This book shows in stories and portraits how the first German navy came into being and who the protagonists were to whom this navy essentially owed its existence and survival. Although it passed away under the auction hammer in 1853, this first German navy lived on in its writings and in its spirit until the present day, as part of that historical arc from the revolution of 1848 to the time of a reunited Germany.
On 18 May 1848, the deputies of the first elected German parliament, the German Constituent National Assembly, entered the Paulskirche in Frankfurt amid the ringing of bells, black-red-gold flags and the cheers of the people. On 14 June, this parliament passed its first resolution, six million thalers to establish a beginning for the German navy. In addition to its military purpose against the Danish naval blockade in the course of the Schleswig-Holstein conflict, this navy was above all to be a symbol of German state unity as well as of its liberal foundations, those of parliament and the constitution of the German Empire adopted by it in March 1849.
