Description
On the occasion of his 60th birthday, the German Naval Museum and the German Naval Association honour Dieter Hartwig with the summary publication of his most important essays and lecture texts, some of which are thus made accessible to a wider readership for the first time. Against the background of his studies in history and political science, their focus is on topics arising from the history of the German navy as well as the German Federal Navy and - closely linked to it - security and defence policy.
They arose over the last thirty years both from his work as an instructor at the Mürwik Naval School and the German Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Hamburg and from his lecturing activities beyond his professional obligations. Dieter Hartwig's concern to contribute military and in particular naval history knowledge to the development of the historical image of today's generation arose from his commitment to two major projects: 1. he played a decisive role in the establishment of the German Naval Museum in Wilhelmshaven in a position of responsibility and established its reputation in professional circles. 2. under his leadership, the Naval Memorial in Laboe was renovated and developed into a national memorial with an international character. Dieter Hartwig has repeatedly dealt with biographies and paid tribute to naval officers. His publications on tradition and security policy reflect the anchoring of the Bundeswehr in the democratic constitution of the Federal Republic, to which he is committed. Volume 6 of the series "Kleine Schriftenreihe zur Militär- und Marinegeschichte".
