Description
Gustav Bachmann was a contemporary witness to the development of the Kaiserliche Marine from 1876 to 1918 and in 1915, as Chief of the Admiral's Staff, an important figure in the discussions about unrestricted submarine warfare. The memoirs, written for the family from the 1920s onwards and previously inaccessible, are a fascinating account not only of the development of the Kaiserliche Marine from 1876 onwards, its organisation, operations abroad and in the colonies, the training of officers, individual officers and Alfred von Tirpitz's influence as Secretary of State of the Reichsmarineamt.
Bachmann also describes the period of World War 1, when Bachmann was Chief of the Naval Station of the Baltic Sea and for a few months Chief of the Admiral's Staff, as well as the end of the Navy in October/November 1918 as a contemporary witness. The 1915 diary describes in detail the heated arguments between the leading naval officers and Reich Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg and Kaiser Wilhelm II.
