The name Andreas Achenbach is associated with one of the main protagonists and most influential personalities of the Düsseldorf School of Painting. Born in 1815, he had a decisive influence on the internationality of Düsseldorf and German painting. He was called the "ruler of land and sea" because he shaped landscape painting like no other painter of his time. While he was still taught idealistic landscape painting during his training, Achenbach turned to the naturalistic conception at a very early age.
Through his early travels with his father, he also found access to marine painting and the depiction of the elements of water and storm at a young age. His modern view of landscape and marine painting ensured his early success, for when he was only 20 years old he already sold his painting "Great Navy with Lighthouse" to Frederick of Prussia for the decoration of Rheinstein Palace. For almost a century, his international success also ensured the fame of the Düsseldorf School of Painting. The works presented here come from a private collection and show the different creative periods, but also the different techniques with which Achenbach worked: classical oil paintings, watercolour works, drawings, sketches and studies as well as works of graphic art.
