After the Russian troops broke through the positions of the Ukrainian army in the south and east of the country, which were suffering from a massive shortage of ammunition and manpower, they advanced again as far as Kiev this time successfully. President Zelensky and his government were overthrown, and an authoritarian puppet regime of Moscow's choice took their place. While Russian society remains in a state of wartime economy, the country's huge and now battle-hardened army is able to recover in the following years. And it has learned from its mistakes in the early stages of the war in Ukraine. In addition, China, Iran and North Korea continue to arm their ally in Moscow. The Americans have now largely withdrawn militarily from Europe in order to concentrate all their forces on the looming war with China in the Pacific. Germany and France have still not managed to establish a strong European security alliance. And early one mild March morning in 2028, Russian tanks, flanked by bombers and supported by massive rocket fire, enter the Baltic States. A decision must be made at NATO headquarters in Brussels before things take their course... It is only a hypothetical future scenario that political scientist and military expert Carlo Masala presents in his new book but it shows in a particularly drastic way what is at stake today.
