Thirty years after its establishment, the Special Forces Command (KSK) is an effective and highly efficient instrument of political leadership in the Federal Republic of Germany. Globally deployable, it offers differentiated, appropriate options for action at a strategic and operational level. Due to its special characteristics, the KSK is very closely and carefully monitored and controlled by parliament. In recent years, the organisation has carried out a wide range of operations in crisis and conflict zones and has gained a wealth of experience.

These range from reconnaissance missions and advising and training local security forces to operations against military opponents. However, many of these missions could only be carried out successfully because the KSK was supported by other Bundeswehr forces, other ministries or other NATO partners. The KSK is characterised by its commando soldiers. Carefully selected, comprehensively trained and "up to date" equipped, they are the heart, brain and muscle of the organisation. They are creative, adaptive elite soldiers for whom mission fulfilment always comes first. In doing so, the soldiers often utilise unconventional, sometimes even non-military methods and means. Today, the KSK is the driving force behind many innovations within the armed forces. The genes of the army's special forces are recognisable in many items of equipment, e.g. in clothing, protective waistcoats, helmets, weapons, vehicles and radios of the Bundeswehr.
