With this fourth and final volume on the American presence in France during the Cold War, it was time to address the subject of French civilian employees at American bases. They often had formative professional experiences, which they generally remember with great emotion and even genuine nostalgia. The authors then introduce the secondary air bases set up by NATO for fear of nuclear war. However, this concept did not last, especially in France, where even the main bases were underutilised. They then head south to discover the US Navy in Villefranche-sur-Mer, the home port of the flagship of the 6th Fleet. Finally, the withdrawal of the Americans was the logical final chapter. The authors have compared two very different withdrawals: the anticipated and prepared withdrawal of civilians who were members of military families and had to be evacuated in the event of conflict (NEO programme), and the forced and rather improvised FRELOC withdrawal, which was a consequence of President de Gaulle's ultimatum to vacate the Allied bases in France by 31 March 1967.
