In this book, Tom Mallard describes how he builds exquisite miniature replicas of steam locomotives from the past. After an introduction to the subject, in which he explains how he sees model making as a boundary between art and craft, Tom Mallard talks about the actual acquisition and development of skills, his own motivations and his early influences. After describing his journey through model making through the locomotives he has built and the people he has worked with, he goes into detail about research and design. The main part of the book first describes the tools he uses and then the methods and techniques he employs in building the models. This includes how he uses 3D printing and other techniques in his work, in particular etching, which is well described and illustrated. Throughout the book, we follow Tom Mallard's construction of two 7 mm scale models of the famous Lynton and Barnstaple Manning Wardles, Exe and Yeo. The book is well illustrated throughout and contains detailed drawings and good photos of these locomotives, many photos of the construction process and finally photos of the finished and weathered models. Other types of locomotives are also featured, including a Scaleseven LMS Compound.
