Debates about colonial pasts usually focus on European colonial history in the 19th and 20th centuries. This book opens up a perspective that spans several eras, from the 16th century to the present day. In addition to Europe, it also considers the Spanish colonial empire in South America, the Russian Empire, South Africa, South Asia and the Malay Archipelago. This shows that colonialism has a long and complex history in which the rise, decline and persistence of colonial phenomena are intertwined. At the same time, it critically examines what can be considered colonial in specific places, practices and ideas, and what continuities, breaks and grey areas reveal themselves from a trans-epochal perspective. In this way, the book encourages a differentiated understanding of colonialism.
