Hans Edelmaier was born in 1946. He joined the Austrian Armed Forces in 1964 and served as a temporary soldier and later as a temporary officer with the 21st Jäger Battalion in Tyrol and at the Army Sports and Close Combat School in Hainburg. In 1978, he became a security officer at the Hochfilzen military training area. As a militia officer, he was commander of Reconnaissance Platoon 8 and, most recently, Staff Battalion 8. In 1991, he transferred to the Salzburg Military Command as a militia advisor, and he has been retired since 2006. He has always been fascinated by adventurous stories and has learned to distinguish between bragging and real adventures. In the course of his life, he has experienced adventures himself and met adventurers. These were always impressive encounters, and he has compiled the most exciting stories and edited them in this anthology. In 1815, an unknown magistrate from Drosendorf sets out on an adventurous hunt for the robber captain Grasel, while on Guadalcanal, an imperial sailor saves the expedition leader from cannibals in a wild melee. A mountain infantry lieutenant is scattered in an ambush during the Polish campaign and struggles to fight his way back to his own troops. A shooting instructor in Guatemala uses his presence of mind to outwit a killer commando. Two other impressive episodes took place in the Indian Wars and the colonial wars in Africa. In Haiti, a determined Marine officer crushes a guerrilla movement. And then there are the adventures of the present, which are in no way inferior to their historical predecessors: a private detective foils a terrorist attack, a non-commissioned officer prevents a shootout with a lightning-fast reaction. A lieutenant climbs Mont Blanc with two non-commissioned officers on the spot, and a woman wins the race to the South Pole as part of a team. Fifteen adventures, fifteen critical situations, fifteen trials of determined men and one determined woman, fifteen deeds with different consequences: difficult sporting victories, but also rescues from difficult situations, overcoming difficult tasks.
