Crete is considered by many to be the true origin of Europe. Zeus in the form of a bull abducted the Phoenician king's daughter, who gave our continent its name, to this very island. The island is also the setting for other well-known Greek myths. The cruel Minotaur lived in the labyrinth of the palace of Knossos, his half-sister Ariadne devised the trick with the red thread in the same place to save her lover Theseus, and the artist Daidalos and his son Ikaros started their dangerous flight to freedom from here. This treasure trove of stories and history is complemented by important cultural sites. First and foremost are the many palace centres from the Bronze Age. In Knossos, Phaistos, Agia Triada and elsewhere, the partly vividly restored building remains and in particular the colourful wall paintings with their enchanting motifs allow visitors to immerse themselves in life over 3,500 years ago. Despite the end of the Minoan civilisation in the 12th century BC, Crete remained an important settlement site and is therefore home to numerous other archaeological ruins and evidence from all periods of antiquity up to Roman times. Follow these exciting traces from the sea coast to the breathtaking plateaus, gorges and impressive mountain landscapes! Explore this very special Greek island, which is worth more than a single trip, with the help of the vividly written texts!
