The book explores the history and principles of camouflage and shows how deception and disguise have shaped espionage from the First World War to the modern day. Published to coincide with the Spy Museum's new exhibition, this illustrated book introduces four basic principles of camouflage and shows how deception and illusion underpin espionage. Before these principles were adopted by the military, naturalists and artists studied how animals and birds disappear into their surroundings. As technology changed warfare in the early 20th century, these insights were applied to the battlefield and referred to as camouflage during the First World War. Beyond blending into the environment, disruptive patterns dazzle were used on ships to distort perspective and hinder submarine attacks. The threat of long-range air raids during the Second World War led to the use of disruptive colouring and camouflage at airfields and important factories. The long-standing connections between theatre, Hollywood, stage magic and secret services produced remarkable masters of disguise during the Second World War, who used their skills to hide and conjure entire armies. Stories about people in disguise can be found throughout human history and culture, and disguise is at the heart of deception. Changing one's identity can mean the difference between success and failure in espionage. Mimicry is as important for undercover agents as it is for animals: agents must not only look like their role, but also assume new identities, lead double lives and deceive everyone they encounter. The book not only traces the history of disguise and its influence on covert operations, but also considers the impact of modern detection technologies on disguise and spies in the future.
