It is commonly believed that everything has already been said about Winston Churchill especially by Churchill himself. And yet Andrew Roberts has managed to unearth press articles, private correspondence and diaries including, not least, the previously undisclosed diary of King George VI that cannot be found in any of the thousand or so biographies written about this figure who was so important to Great Britain and the 20th century. All this enables him to produce an extremely captivating narrative based on a wealth of now classic but also often little-known or even unpublished quotations that paint a sometimes consistent, sometimes contrasting picture of Churchill as a person. Roberts separates truth from falsehood, refutes the numerous myths and even slanders that clung to him, but also highlights the justified criticism of which he is by no means free, and masterfully paints a portrait of this old lion whose entire life before 1940 served only to prepare him for his great work, which remains his war years.
