After the Norman Conquest, the Wakefield estate became a Norman stronghold, and the Warenne family, Earls of Surrey, built castles at Sandal and Wakefield. A decisive battle was fought at Wakefield in 1460 during the Wars of the Roses, resulting in the death of Richard, Duke of York. Another battle for Wakefield was fought during the Civil War, when parliamentary troops besieged and destroyed Sandal Castle and captured the wealthy port and market town from the royalist defenders. In later centuries, troops were raised in Wakefield to fight against Bonnie Prince Charlie, and volunteers were recruited to fight against Napoleon. These volunteers served in all of Britain's foreign conflicts in the 19th century and during the two world wars in the 20th century. The home front in Wakefield was also affected by the wars during these conflicts, and the sites of the underground air raid shelters from the Second World War are still preserved today. This book is of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about Wakefield's remarkable military history.
