The Invalidenfriedhof in Berlin, which has existed since 1748, initially only a burial ground for the neighbouring Invalidenhaus, grew over the course of two centuries into one of Berlin's most impressive cemeteries. In addition to the dead of a civilian community, important personalities of Prussian-German military history rest here close together, including Generals Gerhard von Scharnhorst and Bogislav von Tauentzien, who achieved fame and honour in the wars of liberation.

No less important are artists such as Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Friedrich August Stüler and Christian Daniel Rauch, to whom unique creations of funerary art are owed in this cemetery. Located on the sector border since 1945, large parts of the cemetery disappeared under the death strip from 1961 onwards, while the burial grounds in front of the Wall were severely neglected for decades. With the restoration of numerous gravesites beginning in 1990 and the reconstruction of paths, avenues and grave gratings, the former aura of the cemetery can be experienced again without denying the traces of recent German history.
