During the annexation by Germany (1870-1918), Metz and part of Lorraine, which had been annexed, were represented by the Presse Messine, which was made up of the Lorrain and the Messin. It was an identity-forming, Francophone, Francophile, patriotic and protesting press. After returning to France in 1918 and faced with the threat from Germany, the same press became the guardian of the reconquered France. With a solid information network and under the leadership of outstanding editors-in-chief who knew Germany and diplomatic secrets very well, the Presse Messine made it its mission to warn of the growing danger from Germany. The threat posed by a Germany that opposed the democratic Weimar Republic, was hostile to France, nationalistic, pan-Germanist, militaristic and revanchist... A Germany that, even before National Socialism, was determined to wage war to bring down the Treaty of Versailles of 1919 and regain its place as a world power. The foresight of the Presse Messine was incredible, but unfortunately it was not heeded by France. Four years of research and illustration work were set in motion to bring this work to fruition.
