Erich Rosen describes in this book, written over 100 years ago, how he was a legionnaire in Algeria. The book shows the background of why one joined the Foreign Legion, the life in the barracks, the drill and also the punishments in the Foreign Legion. How one spent one's free time. It is interesting to learn how the legionnaires were exploited as cheap labour for infrastructure work in the colonies. It is striking and surprising that Rosen does not describe any combat, but apparently the presence of the legion was enough to deter potential insurgents. Finally, the author describes his successful escape from the Foreign Legion, as well as the punishments for unsuccessful escapes. Erwin Rosen describes these facts on the basis of both his own experiences and the accounts of others.
