The "Little Knighthood" provides the best possible overview: Here the reader learns everything worth knowing about knighthood and sword initiation, about tournaments, forms of combat and equipment, about armies of knights and famous knights, about the rise and fall of the knighthood, right up to the robber barons. The work also impresses with its abundance of expressive illustrations.
"Knight" is nowadays an almost exclusively positive word that stands for bravery, loyalty and nobility, as a symbol of a romanticised High Middle Ages. Indeed, at the height of chivalry in the Middle Ages, there were rules that deemed such ideals indispensable, but research shows that such ideals - which were a focus of courtly literature - comprise the essence of chivalry only to a small extent. There was a long development before a knighthood emerged, which is shown in this book, the relationship between rulers and knights was complicated. Not only the social role is described, but also customs, armament, wars, orders - without romanticisation.
