Handbook of heraldic terminology. Heraldry, the art of heraldry, means heraldry and includes the fields of heraldry, heraldry and heraldic law. Heraldry in the heraldic sense dates back to the 12th century. Heraldry deals with the structure of coats of arms, their meaning and the significance of the individual parts and symbols of the coats of arms. The herald was the expert in reading the coat of arms and recognising its bearer. Previously, the supervision of coats of arms was exercised by heralds, who might be headed by a herald-king (still in Britain today). The author of the present volume "Principles of the Art of Heraldry" Maximilian Gritzner (1843-1902) was a heraldist and expert in phaleristics, the study of orders. As a privy councillor in the Berlin Ministry of the Interior he was responsible for family and municipal coats of arms in Wilhelmine Prussia.
