This handbook, which was well established as the "coat of arms primer" of the Herold Society (founded in 1869), is a must for all those who are professionally or privately interested in heraldry and heraldic art. It is now published in a completely revised and newly designed 20th edition by Böhlau Verlag. The standard work on heraldry systematically presents the sub-areas of heraldry - state heraldry, communal heraldry and family heraldry. In particular, it deals comprehensively with questions that are frequently raised in heraldic practice: Principles for the design of new coats of arms, the interpretation of old coats of arms, the right to bear coats of arms of families with the same name, the distinctiveness of coats of arms or fraudulent coats of arms in the past and today. Ludwig Biewer and Eckart Henning, both proven experts, have completely revised and updated the last edition of the handbook published in 1998. The book, with numerous four-colour illustrations and completely redesigned, is groundbreaking for historians and meets all the more modern demands of heraldists and genealogists.
