On April 24, 1881, a French expeditionary force of 30,000 men landed on Tunisian soil, and another landed on May 1. France established the first protectorate in its history in Tunisia on May 11 with the support of the Tunisian ruler Saddok Bey. The protectorate was formalized by the Treaty of Bardo on May 12, 1881. The work shows the orders and medals issued in connection with the French colonization of Tunisia.
