In the last quarter of the 19th century, the French colonial empire reached its peak. There was a great need for decorations, but the Legion of Honour alone could not meet this need. With the decree of 10 May 1896, five orders already existing in the colonies were incorporated into the National Orders. They thus became National Orders, conferred by the President of the Republic on the proposal of the local Governors and Residents General.
On 23 May 1896, the opinion of the Council of the Order of the Legion of Honour was made binding on the appointments. Subsequently, the Order of Cambodia, the Order of the Black Star, the Order of Nichan el Alnouar, the Order of the Dragon of Annam and the Order of the Star of Anjouan were admitted. The Tunisian and Moroccan orders remained beylikale and chérifische orders. The same applied to Madagascar, Cameroon, Syria and Lebanon, where the orders remained local orders, some of which, incidentally, still exist. It was not until the decree of 3 December 1963 that the colonial orders were abolished.
