Situated in the middle of an idyllic river landscape, it appears to be a monstrous colossus with a length of over 400 metres, a width of 97 metres and a height of 33 metres, indestructible and built for eternity: the submarine bunker "Valentin" in Bremen-Farge. In 1942, it was commissioned as one of the most extensive armament projects of the German navy in order to be able to build submarines protected from Allied bombing. The project became the scene of the greatest crimes committed in Bremen during the period of National Socialist rule. Several thousand forced labourers were used for the gigantic construction - for many the operation ended fatally. On the basis of many new findings, the author traces the history of the bunker construction with numerous documents and photos and presents the changeable debates in Bremen about the handling of the bunker since the end of the war.
