The mysterious dark worlds under Berlin were not accessible to the public for a long time, and even those responsible for the city are still puzzled by them today. Many documents were lost in the turmoil of the Second World War, so that forgotten subterranean installations surprisingly resurfaced.

The authors of the book, together with their association "Berliner Unterwelten" (Berlin Underworlds), have made it their task to shed light on this darkness. They researched domestic and foreign archives, interviewed contemporary witnesses and explored on site stations without sidings, connecting corridors without exits and concrete colossi without any function. They tell the story of the diverse uses of Berlin's underground and report on crypts and brewery cellars as well as sewer shafts, pneumatic post lines, bunkers and "blind tunnels".
