Yet, for Cicero himself, rhetorical mastery was merely a means to serve his political life's purpose: the preservation and defense of the Roman Republic. He fought for this goal with utter devotion and ultimately sacrificed his life for it. Later, the "Father of the Fatherland" opposed Caesars autocratic ambitions and supported Octavian, only to be betrayed by him; fighting a losing battle, he was eventually assassinated in 43 BC by the henchmen of Mark Antony.
