Historical novel. Around 15 AD, Aulus, the adopted son of the tribune Claudius Marcinus, arrives in the dense primeval forests north of the great river as a decurion of the Roman cavalry. Abducted by the Romans as a five-year-old boy from the land of the Bructerians and brought up in the camps of the legionaries as the tribune's boy, Aulus himself joins the legion and thus, as a young man, returns to the land that was once his home. There he learns of his true origins and of the man who killed his parents. He turns away from the Romans and finds his home again among the tribe of the Bructerians. The legionary of the cavalry, Aulus Marcinus, becomes the Teuton Gerowulf. Full of hatred and disappointment, in search of the truth and to take revenge, he joins the hordes of the Cheruscan prince Sigurd, whom the Romans call Arminius.
