Companion volume to an exhibition at the Municipal Museum in Braunschweig, running from November 10, 2026, to April 11, 2027. This period marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of American Independence. One aspect of the associated military conflictwhich lasted from 1775 to 1783was the deployment of German auxiliary troops and Indigenous warriors fighting as British allies. Evidence of this remains today in the form of some 80 Indigenous objects preserved in German museums. The exhibition "Tomahawk and Drum"realized thanks to generous funding from the Terra Foundation for American Artwas developed in dialogue with descendants of some of the Indigenous groups involved in the conflict. The exhibitions main title reflects this connection: while "Tomahawk" alludes to the aforementioned military service of German soldiers alongside Indigenous warriors, the "Drum" serves as the exhibition's starting point. Engaging with the drum was the initial inspiration for the idea of ??giving Indigenous perspectives a more central role. The catalog presents the exhibited objects and their cultural background.
