At the turn of the century in 1900, activities increased in Germany to use balloons and airships, and later also aircraft, in the German colonies. A long struggle was necessary before the Reichskolonialamt succeeded in sending the first aircraft to German Southwest Africa in 1914. Only the Nationalflugspende in 1912 had opened the way for this. The author describes these efforts and reports on the adventures that the pilots had to endure. He introduces the aircraft, which were only conditionally prepared for flights in the tropical climate. He describes in detail the deployment of the pilots under the adverse conditions at the beginning of the First World War in German Southwest and German East Africa as well as in Tsingtau.
