During the First World War, the Imperial Navy built up an airship division to provide surveillance of the North Sea and bombardment of British cities. As a weapon of war, the airship was a mad enterprise. The airships were carried by flammable hydrogen and as the British developed new aircraft and incendiary munitions, one after another was shot down.
This is the story of the Kaiser's last airship, the L 70, and of some of the men who rode it.
