Descriptionof Luftwaffen Profile. Issue 20: Spanische Luftwaffe - Ejercito del Aire. Part 1

Manufacturer
The first of two parts of this booklet describes the history, structure, and development of Spanish military aviation from the early 20th century to the mid-1970s. Its roots, however, extend much further back: the first military balloon experiments took place as early as 1792, permanent balloon units were established from 1884 onwards, and airship squadrons were added later. The introduction of Maurice Farman aircraft in 1911 finally marked the beginning of the modern era of Spanish military aviation and thus the true history of the Spanish Air Force. Since then, the Spanish Armed Forces have contributed to safeguarding the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the country. The Ejército del Aire y del Espacio (EdAE) comprises approximately 22,000 personnel and is responsible for securing Spanish airspace and space, as well as for the defense of the mainland, islands, and adjacent waters. Furthermore, it participates in international peacekeeping and humanitarian operations as part of NATO and UN missions.
