Description
This volume tells the story of one of the most controversial and at the same time least known units formed by Italians during the Second World War. It was formed by the voluntary entry into the Waffen-SS of Italian soldiers who, after the signing of the armistice on 8 September 1943, refused to lay down their arms, preferring to continue fighting in a hopeless war in order to respect the pact of alliance with Germany.
Approximately 50,000 Italians decided to join the Waffen-SS. Based on German, Italian and American documents and veterans' accounts, this book examines the events surrounding this division, its formation as a "legion", its transformation into a "storm brigade" and its final status as an "Italian" division of the Waffen-SS, as well as the operations in which it took part, both against the Allies, as at Anzio-Nettuno, and against partisan units, until its final end in April 1945. The pictorial apparatus is exceptional, consisting of over 500 contemporary photographs, many of which are unpublished and improved on the first edition. The second edition of the volume contains some 150 additional pages and a new, more extensive selection of photographs.
