In 1939, Britain had the densest and most complex railway network in the world. With the outbreak of war, this network was crucial to maintaining the country's operations. Many people today are aware of the impact of the Blitz of 1940-41, when the German Luftwaffe attempted to bring the British population to its knees by bombing civilian targets. However, few are aware of a key element of these events the Battle of the Railways. The Luftwaffe's determined efforts to cripple the country's railway network were countered by the efforts of railway personnel to keep the system running despite all the difficulties. Adolf Hitler was convinced that air raids would bring Britain to its knees, but the Luftwaffe was unsuccessful in this endeavour, partly because its attacks were sporadic and not strategically focused, but mainly because of the often unseen bravery of the railway workers who kept the network running. This is the story of those crucial but now often overlooked months on the home front during the Second World War and of the men and women who endured so much to keep this vital industry running.
