The famous SBS was founded in 1940 as the Special Boat Section and later incorporated into the 1st SAS Regiment as part of Colonel David Stirling's expansion. It was a commando unit tasked with carrying out amphibious attacks on Axis-occupied territory during the Second World War. Originally designated the Folboat Section by Stirling and reformed as the Special Boat Squadron under the command of Captain Earl George Jellicoe, the SBS set about wreaking havoc on enemy-occupied islands in the Aegean Sea. This is the personal account of one man, Desmond Marshall, who was recruited as a radio operator to L Squadron SBS in late 1943. The account was written in the years after the war and remained undiscovered for over half a century. Only now is this unique account of wartime life in the SBS being published in his own words.
