Johann Wieninger was born on 7 September 1913 near Passau and joined the SS-Totenkopf-Verband "Oberbayern" as early as spring 1934. For more than five years he belonged to the guard force of the Dachau concentration camp, was trained to the rank of medical orderly or medical assistant and took part in operations in the Sudetenland, in Austria and in the occupation of the rest of Czechoslovakia.
As a departmental medical orderly he then belonged to the SS division "Totenkopf", was trained in 1943
as a medical SS leader and transferred to the SS field hospital 501 at the beginning of 1944. Here he experienced, among other things, the invasion of Normandy and finally - as part of the 6th Panzer Army - the Battle of the Bulge. In January 1945 he took over
a field convalescent company with which he was transferred to Hungary. He was taken prisoner of war in the United States, but was discharged in 1946 due to his serious illness. The international association of former Dachau prisoners - the Comité International de Dachau - which cooperated with the US authorities, had found no charges against him, and so he was not indicted in the later so-called Dachau Trials.
