Description
Deserters from the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS broke with the Nazi state during the Second World War. They crossed borders in many ways: Norms of military justice and military-masculine values, territorial barriers and front lines, ideological enemy images, ethnic hierarchies and language barriers. Desertion was linked to the search for refuge and acceptance, amnesty and recognition. In the process, deserters moved within political-social frameworks formulated by partisans, allies, neutral states and finally by the successor states of Nazi Germany.
The political controversy surrounding deserters ended 15 years ago with a comprehensive rehabilitation. The contributions in this volume recapitulate this process with current research. They focus on aspects that have received little attention so far, such as the fact that a large number of the deserters were of non-German origin and came from annexed and occupied territories, as well as on the role of helpers. Volume 122 of the series "Kroieg in der Geschichte".
