The night of bombing in June 1943.
Very detailed and from different perspectives, one of the most momentous nights of bombing for Düsseldorf is portrayed. The attack claimed over 1,200 lives and left extensive destruction in its wake. While researching the air war history of his native city, Marcel Lesaar found war reports, diary entries, documents and photos in numerous archives, which found their way into this book. Eyewitness accounts bring the reader closer to what people had to experience and suffer. These include the interview with the then 12-year-old Inge, who was able to escape from the burning apartment building by breaking through the wall in the basement, the account of the Australian gunner Dunstan about his first deployment, the experiences of the 15-year-old anti-aircraft gunner Karl Heinz, as well as the interviews with the twin sisters Annemarie and Rosemarie, who had to watch their mother being crushed to death by masonry while trying to put out the fire in the house.
Press comments on the author's previous books: "A very readable anti-war book." Westdeutsche Zeitung, 10 June 2016 "Absolutely worth reading." Rheinische Post, 14 February 2017 "What distinguishes Lesaar's work is that, without being judgmental, he meticulously deals with the facts." NRZ, 26 July 2018 "This makes his work an exciting read." NGZ, 1 August 2018
Marcel Lesaar, born in 1967, savings bank business economist, has long been intensively involved in genealogical research and was an honorary employee of the LVR Office for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments in the Rhineland from 2013 to 2021.
