Description
14 June 1940: After the deceptive calm of the "drôle de guerre" and the Blitzkrieg in the West, the Wehrmacht marches into Paris. For four years, the Nazis establish their regime of occupation over France, and the French react with resistance, passivity or collaboration. Kersten Knipp creates a panorama of the Grande Nation in a state of emergency: he depicts everyday life and the behaviour of the population towards the occupiers, oscillating between fear and admiration.
He shows the persecution and extermination of the Jews by the Germans - with the active assistance of the French authorities. He portrays fallen as well as rising heroes: Marshal Pétain and General de Gaulle. And he traces the German crimes, such as the massacre of the children of Izieu or the Rafle du Vel' d'Hiv. The relationship between the Germans and the French was always one of ambivalence, and at no time do the contradictions come to light as sharply as between 1940 and 1944.
