This study examines various aspects of the investigation and prosecution of German war crimes in Poland after 1945. The most important institution in this area was the Main Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes/Nazi Crimes in Poland. It was responsible for gathering evidence of the crimes and cooperating with the judiciary of the Federal Republic of Germany, in particular with the Central Office of the State Justice Administrations for the Investigation of National Socialist Crimes. Lukasz Jasinski shows that, as an institution of the undemocratic Polish state, the commission was subject to political pressure from the communist authorities and was used for propaganda campaigns and to shape the collective memory of the Second World War in Poland. Furthermore, the history of the Main Commission was also marked by the different phases in German-Polish relations and the political rivalry between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic.
