April 1937: During the Spanish Civil War, a Basque town is bombed by German combat aircraft, claiming the lives of numerous people. Just three months later, Pablo Picasso unveils a monumental painting that, to this day, stands as a symbol of the madness of war: *Guernica*. For a long time, a veil of silence was cast over German war crimes committed during the Second World War; only in recent years have places such as Guernica, Babi Yar, and Lidice begun to receive greater attention. Yet, the historical context surrounding these events often remains little known. Ralph Erbar examines ten sites across nine European countries where war crimes were perpetrated between 1937 and 1945. He demonstrates how these atrocitiesoften long repressedhave been integrated into the culture of remembrance through monuments, paintings, literature, and even the symbolic kneeling of a German politician.
