In 1918/19, German historians faced not only a democratic new beginning but also the crisis-ridden consequences of Germany's defeat in the war. Silesia, now divided between Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, became a projection screen for competing national historical narratives within the tensions of East Central Europe. Against this backdrop, historiography served, in part, as a legitimizing science and proved susceptible to the nationalist ideological tendencies of the time. Representatives from various disciplines and research fields illuminate the development of historiography and historical culture in the Oder region during the Weimar Republic, drawing on primary sources and presenting it in an accessible way.
